Bombay Sapphire — 2023
Bombay Sapphire AR Painting Experience
AR Brand Experience
Business Challenge
As a major Vivid Sydney sponsor, Bombay Sapphire wanted visitors to engage with its collaboration with artist Elliott Routledge. The opportunity was to take his commissioned artwork beyond the event displays and give people a way to interact with it at the Bombay Sapphire bar.
Strategic Insight
Elliott’s shapes, brushstrokes and colour palette offered visitors the tools to make something of their own. A drink coaster could provide a simple entry point: scan a QR code, open the experience on a phone and start creating while at the bar.
Creative System
We created a web-based AR painting experience that let visitors decorate a virtual Bombay Sapphire bottle using elements drawn from Elliott’s work. They could place his distinctive shapes in 3D space, paint with brushes based on his style and move around the artwork they had made.
QR codes on coasters connected the physical bar to the experience. After creating a piece, visitors could share it on social media and enter a competition to win exclusive artwork by Elliott. The idea extended across the campaign’s social and out-of-home communications, giving people a reason to visit and take part.
My Contribution
As Creative and Art Director for 92Proof, I developed the experience and defined its user journey, working to make Elliott’s artistic language feel natural to use in AR. I directed the 3D modelling and interface design, worked with the game and web developers through testing and launch, and presented the work to stakeholders throughout production. I also directed the campaign communications so the invitation to create felt connected to the experience itself.
Why This Matters
The project turned an artist collaboration into something visitors could take part in. By connecting a coaster, a phone and Elliott’s artwork, we gave people a creative interaction with Bombay Sapphire that began at the bar and could continue through the work they shared.
